Conceived in Saudi Arabia, born in Taiwan, and raised in both rural Massachusetts and the East Bay, Vivian Chen exemplifies the cosmopolitanism of San Francisco. Shortly after graduating from the University of California, Santa Cruz, she took up photography by chance, and has since then practiced it diligently, because of what it teaches her about seeing. When Vivian's not tied up shooting Bay Area hip hop artists, wine-country weddings, or breakdancers in Nicaragua, she likes to indulge her gourmet-meets-lowbrow palate, visit parallel universes with Phillip K. Dick and Octavia Butler, and make burnt offerings to the gods of mid-century jazz.
